The 2025 application for residency is 1. – 30.9.2024.
The residency period can be from two weeks to three months. The residency is free for the artist/researcher. The residency includes the living and working space.
Residency can be applied for by individual Finnish and foreign professional artists/researchers as well as artist/researcher groups (working group or business organization) for the implementation of the work plan which has been presented in advance. It is also possible to apply for a residency with a young child/family.
Applications submitted through the web service during the application period are processed. Please read through our application instructions carefully before applying. We do not accept applications via email or any other way outside of the web service.

Application Period and Selection Criteria
Old Mine Residency is located in the Old Mine area of Outokumpu, one kilometer from the center of Outokumpu. The residency is managed by the City of Outokumpu.
• Application period
September 1–30, with decisions made by October 31. Applications will not be accepted after the deadline.
• Who can apply?
The residency is open to Finnish and international professional artists/researchers, working groups, and registered organizations with a business ID for the implementation of a pre-submitted work plan.
Individual and group residencies can be applied for periods ranging from 2 weeks to 3 months (January 1 – December 31, 2025). It is also possible to apply for the residency with a small child or family.
• Online application service
Residency applications must be submitted with the required attachments HERE ». The online service is open annually during the application period and closes at the deadline. Applications cannot be submitted after the online service has closed. The online application service is open from September 1 to September 30 until 23:59 Finnish time.
• What can the residency be applied for?
The residency can be applied for artistic and scientific work. A free residency requires participation in the daily life of the city (e.g., workshops, exhibitions, performances, etc.). The target audience can include children, youth, seniors, etc.
• Restrictions
Artists are responsible for their own travel costs and arrangements. No pets allowed. The facilities and the mine area are not fully accessible.
• Facilities
Explore the residency’s workspaces on the website and indicate in your application which spaces you would primarily like to use. The separately bookable workspaces include Kiisu Theatre, Kiisu Hall, Karbidi, and Cultural House Marita.
• Individual Residency
Each residency period aims to include both Finnish and international artists, representing various artistic and research fields, as well as both emerging and established artists/researchers.
• Group Residency
Group residencies can be applied for by working groups in the fields of arts and sciences, as well as organizations with a business ID. We also encourage interdisciplinary projects that combine science and art. Groups consisting of both Finnish and international participants should, whenever possible, appoint a Finnish representative as the responsible leader, who will complete the application and act as the main contact person.
• Selection Criteria
The residency is intended for professional artists and researchers and is designed for artistic or scientific work. It can be applied for at the beginning, middle, or final stages of a project. Decisions are based on peer review.
The selection process considers the following:
- The content of the work plan and its relevance to the artist/researcher
- The suitability of the facilities for the proposed work
- The project’s impact within the fields of art or science on an international, national, or regional level
- How the project contributes to the daily life of Outokumpu and its residents – which target audience will engage with the artistic or scientific process in Outokumpu
• Required Application Attachments
A CV and a work plan, including a work sample (e.g., portfolio, website, link to a video or audio recording).
The selection panel consists of experts from various fields.
